Award and minimum wage changes

The Fair Work Commission recently announced an increase to the national minimum wage of 2.5%. The increase means the new national minimum wage from 1 July 2021 is $772.60 per week or $20.33 per hour.
The increase also applies to modern award wages however in certain industries the effective date for the increase has been delayed.

  • Most awards increased from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2021.
  • The increase for the General Retail Industry Award 2020 applies from the first full pay period on or after 1 September 2021.
  • 21 other awards increase from the first full pay period on or after 1 November 2021 including the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020, Restaurant Industry Award 2020, and Fitness Industry Award 2020 (among others).

Business owners should ensure they have reviewed their employee wages to check they are compliant with these increased rates from 1 July, or alternatively, identified whether the wage increase in their industry has been delayed and they are ready to comply from this date.
